In Tunisia, Oxfam partners with Al Khatt, a national non-governmental, non-profit organisation, founded in 2013. 

Al Khatt is a think tank - a body of experts providing advice on specific political or economic problems. They aim to be a space for reflection on the future of journalism in the internet age. Al Khatt reflects on the production of journalistic content and the ways it can be shared. Al Khatt believes that access to free and quality information is a fundamental right. The organisation works for press freedom, freedom of expression and access to information for a democratic and transparent system in Tunisia.

With the ReCIPE project, Al Khatt will further their work:

  • They will strengthen the capacities of organisations and independent media, in terms of personal data protection and the protection of their digital infrastructure.
  • They will influence public policies and legislation, to ensure there are laws that guarantee the protection of digital data and the digital rights of citizens.
  • They will also help formal and informal civil society actors to protect themselves against cyberattacks.

Since 2021, political turmoil in Tunisia has created a more difficult environment for freedoms, including digital rights. Ensuring data protection, is vital to safeguard the privacy of people who may be targeted for their opposition. Also, with the political climate becoming more restrictive, the protection of online spaces where there is freedom of expression is essential. Independent media and other organisations need strong digital security to continue their work, without fear.
