AMATE, El Salvador
AMATE El Salvador works to defend the rights of the Salvadoran population. They use a feminist approach to do this and particularly focus their work on the economic, social and cultural rights of the LGBTQI+ population. They promote inclusion and equity through research, training, advocacy and work to help those affected by human rights violations to articulate their narratives and collective memories.
AMATE El Salvador’s partnership with Oxfam through the ReCIPE project, will allow this organisation to strengthen several areas:
- Digital Security: resources and strategies to protect vulnerable communities online.
- Digital Civic Participation: data generation about labour rights in digital platforms and more access to technologies to empower civic participation and activism.
- Training and awareness: workshops and training kits on digital rights to increase people’s knowledge to safely and effectively navigate the digital world.
- Participation in global forums and networks: knowledge and experiences on digital rights shared with other organisations from around the world to inform policy and practice discussions.
The project is crucial for El Salvador as the country is currently experiencing the closing of civic participation spaces. There is a growing increase in digital violence against vulnerable groups. The project addresses the need to improve digital security and literacy, especially among women, young people and the LGBTQI+ population. It also encourages people to engage in the digital space and digital rights advocacy. This is important in an environment where these areas are often neglected and are increasingly relevant to the political, economic and social life of the country.
